Scouts Celebrate 100 Years with 10,000 at Cantigny Park

Shoe Drive to benefit Haiti earthquake victims


The Kiwanis Club of Blue Island, IL is sponsoring a used shoe drive to benefit victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti. The shoes must be gently used or new, meaning the shoes must have no holes or tears. The shoes that will be collected will benefit Share Your Soles, a local organization that will distribute the shoes to Haiti. There are several businesses that you can drop your shoes off at. Miracles for Morrissey


Close friends and relatives have joined together to organize "Miracles 4 Morrissey." Our intention is to raise funds to help ease the financial burden that John Morrissey has incurred since his battle with cancer began three years ago.

A major portion of this fundraising effort involves getting donations of all types from resources that are available.

American Cancer Society Woodgrove Relay for Life!


The Woodgrove Relay for Life will hold it 13th Annual Woodgrove Relay event. It will be held Friday June 11, 2010 starting at 6:00pm and conclude Saturday June 12, 2010 at 7:00am. The theme this year is Kicking Cancer off the Island!!!! Survivor Style!!!! The goal of relay is to help raise money for the ACS. Cancer never sleeps or stops, so for this one night neither will we. There are activities for everyone of all ages. Kids activities, Jazzercise at different hours throughout the night, a real favorite at 3:00am. Music and entertainment to walk, run, and sing to through out the night. A midnight pizza party, and different theme laps through out the night. A luminaria ceremony that touches everyone who is present, where we remember everyone who is fighting cancer, lost the fight to cancer, or who has won the fight against cancer. There's a new pageant in town!  Summer Shine 2010 is designated as a fundraiser for the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Chicago as a way to thank them for the care my daughter received for scoliosis.  It was during her recovery - just six months after her surgery - that she entered her first pageant.  She enjoyed it and thought it would be an exciting way to raise funds for Shriners while allowing girls and women of all ages to get involved in a great cause.
 
Contestants will compete in Personal Introduction & Formalwear.   There are other events they may choose to compete in:  Photogenic, Summer Wear, Outfit of Choice and a really fun “Best Flip-flop” overall.    There is a special extra optional Actress for the teenagers.   There is no swimsuit competition.
 
We have SEVEN divisions starting at ages 5 through adult.    The Miss & Ladies contestants may be single, married, divorced or widowed.
 
Summer Shine is a great pageant for any girl that has always wanted to try one.   No experience is necessary.
 
All proceeds benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

4th Annual Hogs For Dogs (and Kitties Too) Heartland Animal Shelter Charity Ride


Rev up your vehicles for Heartland Animal Shelter's Hogs for Dogs (and Kitties too) Charity Ride on Sunday, September 19th.  Registration will begin at 9:30 am at Heartland Animal Shelter, 2975 Milwaukee Avenue in Northbrook, IL. The ride will start around 10:45 am.

The leisurely ride will wind through the northern suburbs, approximately 75 miles, and end at Jesse Oaks in Gages Lake. Free food and music will be provided to registered attendees and free raffle tickets will be offered for each shelter donation from the animal wish list at www.heartlandanimalshelter.net.

Registration for each rider is $25 in advance ($10 for kids 12 and under) or $30 the day of the ride. You may register online using Pay Pal at www.heartlandanimalshelter.net/events or by mailing your check to Heartland Animal Shelter, 2975 Milwaukee Avenue, Norhtbrook, IL 60062. Make checks payable to Heartland Animal Shelter and note "Hogs for Dogs" on the memo section.
